And the winner is...

This has been one of the hardest posts I've had to write, because I know whichever entry I pick as winner of the icon competition, a lot of people are going to be disappointed that I didn't pick their favourite.

Trying to select a winner has forced me to think about what I wanted to get out of this competition. On the surface, the main goal of the competition was just to replace the ugly default icon on the PSP's XMB. However as I've checked out all the entries over the past couple of weeks, I've come to realise that the main objective of the competition should be to define an identity for Daedalus.

In the end, one of the main criteria I've used to select the winner is how well the design works as a logo, or identity, for the project as a whole. For this reason I've picked Patrick Ahmann's design:

I think Patrick's design is wonderfully clean and stylish, and the colours look especially crisp and vibrant on the PSP's screen*. The typography, particularly for the 'daedalus' logo is very simple and distinctive and I think it would work well as a logo on the web. What's more, I got quite excited about using the cog motif on the logo as a progress indicator on loading screens :)

So, well done Patrick!

I want to say a big 'thank you' to everyone who contributed. Many people put a lot of work into this and I'm really sorry that I could only pick one winner. I think the quality of the final 10 was excellent, so if you disagree with my choice hopefully there's something there for you :)

Good choice Nrmn,

your sense of style is second only to your programming skill :).

Maybe its just me or my computer, but I always found the yellow on that one to be too bright.

the cog idea is pretty cool...
Are you going to modify the UI in any other way to make it match daedalus's new logo/style?
Could you make it possible to change the background in the UI, so that we could further personalize daedalus?
good choice btw

Good choice. My only gripe with this one is it says "R14" so unless it comes with the PSD or XCF then youll need to remove that.

I kind of think Patrick should change the greenish colour behind the words to blue. It would match the daedalus menu, and blue looks a lot better :)

I'm glad you found one that you liked, it's not my favorite but it was good to get some more options with this competetion. Now that this thing is done with I hope you can update us soon about any R14 or ME progress. I had a question though, when this whole conversion to ME is done will we see any speedup result of the conversion?

And since you've made some of us upset, you have to make lots of emulator improvements. Lol
:P

Anyway...
did my Icon+BG send okay? You said there was an error. Stupid mediafire

Jody said...

Could you make a contest oh who makes the best PMF Icon for Daedalus??? Oh that one would be fun too.

aadhu said...

yup i belived this was the best of the bunch.. :)

Unknown said...

daedelus pmf contest!!
lol. and audio in xmb.

just to give us something to do while we wait next update. =D

Jody said...

A PMF and audio AT3 contest..
I think I tried that once.

Icon+BG+PMF+AT3, putting that together screws up the performance of Daedalus. I remember doing that and it wasn't very great. There can't be a XMB audio contest, but a PMF contest would be AWESOME!

Hey, glad you choose my design. (:
There's still "R14" on the top, so if you want it to get changed for further versions, just let me know, i will change it.

Excellent choice :)

Well done Patrick, and well done to the final 10.

Strmnnrmn, does this mean we can look forward to a blog re-design?

We should change the yellow into blue...

Everything's possible, but i quiet like the green/yellow, also fit with technic\ programming theme and so on. If you like it to get changed, just ask. Maybe you need help with your new blog design? mail me!

While certainly not the one I picked, imagining seeing the cog rotating as during loading screens make me like this one a whole lot more. Good choice.

Maybe a GUI overhaul may follow this.

No, I think it was a great decision choosing Patrick's icon and background. Hm I'm not sure about changing the green to blue, that would look a bit odd I think.

Dexter said...

well, i picked the official icon and background and a background-sound, so i made an new .PBP

Just replace the "Daedalus%" folder from the original.
I liked so much.

I felt the chose was good, although I considered it second to the rainy one, but it's YOUR opinion and you're sort of the expert on the identity.

Anyway, I was curious if you'd release all the admissions somewhere? Flickr?
