Viewport scaling

It's been a fairly slow week for progress on Daedalus. I've had a few busy days with work, and I was away over the weekend so I've not had much time to work on Daedalus since my last update.

One thing I have managed to implement is viewport scaling however. After the previous release I received an email from Chris Meyer-Rassow which had a couple of interesting points. He suggested that I should have a look at providing a setting to allow the emulator to run with an aspect ratio of 4:3, rather than strecthing everything to fit the PSP's 16:9 (or 15.88236:9 to be accurate :)

I had been meaning to add this option for some time, and as it was only a small change I decided to implement this feature for the next release. I've added 3 different modes, as shown the in screenshots below. The first mode simply scales the graphics up to fit the PSP's screen (this is no different from the current release of the emulator):

This renders at 480x272. Notice how the vertial lines for the 't' and 'f' characters look slightly too heavy. This is as a result of scaling the graphics up to fit the PSP's screen. (As an aside, this screenshot clearly shows another issue that I need to address - the zfighting which is clearly visible in the carpet. I have a couple of ideas for fixing this.)

The next shot shows the same scene with the new unscaled 4:3 viewport setting:

This renders at 320x240, and so avoids scaling up any of the graphics. You can see that the problems with the 'f' and 't characters has gone. On the downside, there's a lot of 'wasted' space around the screen.

The final settings shows the new scaled 4:3 viewport setting:

This maintains a 4:3 ratio (so we maintain the correct aspect ratio), but scales things up to 362x272 to make full use of the screen's height. We waste a little less space with this mode, but some of the original problems with the text are still visible.

In the end all three options are a trade off between making full use of the screen and quality. In the next release it will be possible to adjust this setting as the emulator is running so you can pick whichever one looks best for the rom you're currently running.

As a result of doing this work with the viewport, I also fixed a couple of bugs related to how I was emulating the N64's viewport. When I originally wrote the graphics code for the PSP version of Daedalus, I forgot to handle the N64's viewport scaling/translation, which causes problems rendering certain scenes, as demonstrated in Aerogauge below:

Notice how the car is being rendered off-centre (it should be in the top right hand corner). After my viewport fixes, the same scene now looks like this:

The same change also fixes various minor glitches in a number of other roms (including Mariokart and Waverace), so it's a nice bugfix to get in for the next release.

I dont think it would take up more room / space

first off, Nice strmnnrmn, you always surprise me with all your ideas. i hope your short break was fun and stuff.
anyways, i just thought, stupid idea, that maybe a fourth would be to wide zoom so it isn't stretched, but it fills the screen. the bad thing would be missing the picture. idk, just my two cents.

StrmnNrmn, you should make it so that it streteches the scene in 16:9 and resize the character model to their original size. It would be in the PSP's res, but the characer models would look the same as N64.

_daxter_ said...

absolutely impressive! as somebody said earlier - widescreen fitting the width of the psp screen would be nice. I guess it would be a good idea to make the screen scrollable if you know what i mean. pretty much the same as in snestyl. deadalus and snestyl are the only reason you need a psp - portable fun at its best!

can you actually donate?

keep up the great work!

slightly off topic this, but...
I'm trying to get PSPAUE working, and need a kick.rom. If you have advice my email is johnpaulbowen@blueyonder.co.uk.
Just to be clear here - I'm not suggesting anyone just email me a kick.rom, God forbid, because that - although rather straight-forward and helpfull - would be wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong! I would never condone the wanton distribution of such a file. I would rather throw myself into the mouth of a rusty bladed threshing machine than do so. So, just to re-iterate, please, no one send - to johnpaulbowen@blueyonder.co.uk - an amiga kick.rom
Cheers.

Looks better Ryan, I think your getting the hang of it. But for your next release I think you should really try to use your imagination and come up with a really sick idea for the matchin icon/wallpaper. Just really try to think of something great and you eventually will get an idea, then just go with it and we'll see what happens. Kepp it up, you to StrmnNrmn keep up this great work on Daedalus! And on a side note, I can't wait to get NASCAR 07 for PSP and also be able to play it on my 2.81 Devhooked firmware!

Tinnus said...

gmdude66: that's not possible, unless the emulator knows at runtime what is scenario and what is character, while it just gets a bunch of triangles to render :)

What he COULD try, is cropping the top/bottom portions and re-locating the 2D sprites to the appropriate places (ie: move them up/down if they are in the "cut" areas)

I'm sorry man I looked pretty well and I can't find anywhere to get a kickstart rom. Make sure when you find one that you rename it to "kickstart.rom" (it's case sensative). I searched to no avail and believe me I want to help you but I'm inexperienced when it comes to Amiga emulators. Put keep searching man becasue you have to find one becasue it's a must to play the emulator, so I mean everyone has one. I suggest going to a forum or just using google until you hit something. Good luck man, and I'm sorry!

Here's an idea for you StrmnNrmn,

When Emulator run in 4:3 Screen Ratio, how about a Skin-able Border say with the Top N64 Characters all around the screen, but only in that Screen Resolution,
That would get rid of the Black Boring Borders........

Just an idea for all the Budding Graphics Artists out there!!!

BigMace said...

i agree with paul I was about to suggest that.

Morgan said...

That sounds pretty cool, nice idea. Guys I made a small discovery today, how to get past the start menu in Super Smash Brothers with Dyrnarec ON. All you do is go to the start screen and don't hit anything, wait for the tuturial comes up. As soon as that comes up hit start and it'll bring you to the start menu again, quickly hit start and it will bring you to the menu but hit start ASAP! Then you will end up at the character selection menu. You can choose your character but after that it seems to freeze. I'll keep playing with it and I'll see if I can get in game.

joshisposer said...

Hi guys

first of all i would like to thank strmnnrmn for his great work! guess we cant tell him often enough, how much we appreciate hist work :)

i have been following the progress on this blog for the past 4-5 months and coming by daily to see if a new post has arrived... nonetheless i've been staying on the reading side by now. what caught my attention is the discussion on 9/11:

Don't want to offend anyone, and of course, 9/11 was very tragic. I stood under the WTC myself a year before they collapsed and was impressed by its great architecture. When i saw the pictures on the News I nearly couldn't believe what was happening. Nonetheless you guys must be realistic!

You may be crying all over your (honestly tragic) losses over and over again, but its hard pittying a nation that is going on war over and over again killing so damn many souls day by day by day by day! Don't hear you crying about all the people you killed in Iraq (40'000-100'000 casualties), Hiroshima (140'000 casualties) or Vietnam (230'000 casualties), just to state three examples. And you honestly think the entire world is supposed to pitty the 2000 dead of 9/11? If you really feel sorry for the dead, then write a letter to the senate, demanding, they order back all troops from around the world. think: these are your children fighting out there for nothing and causing reactions like 9/11.. try calming down and take the rest of the world serious guys :)

as i said before, dont want to offend anybody. its bad enough any of these things ever happened.. just think, before you get an emotional outburst :)

cheers!
mike

I'm not making fun of 9/11, it is just the fight. Anyways, I think r9 can't be too much better than r8 without some dramatic code change or something. i jsut can't wait

look guys who are going on about 9/11

I know someone abused you and im willing to abuse them back but you need to remember that its now 5 years since the attack and I also know that people losts familys / friends in it but dont you think its just simple to keep this blog on topic.

I agree with Ryan in some aspects as its on TV nearly every month explaining how the towers collapsed, why the towers collapsed who the fugitives are and what they want... Mr Bush has no idea seeing he was told whilst reading a story to a childeren and he continued the story before going out.

Anyway im curious to when strmnNrmn will

Im curious on what would happen to the emulator when the soundplugins are included. Will it lose some speed/FPS due to sound emulation or is the sound fully hardware controlled?

tsurumaru said...

FEEL MY WRATH!!!1111one

No just kidding,

I'm not going to get involved in the 9/11 debate, its a tragic event that deserves not to be forgotten, but then unfortunately there are hundreds more tragic events that had less publicity and deserve the same.

I'm sure Norman is beavering away behind the scenes and will update us shortly. I would like to bring to the attention of everyone of what was initially lined up for R8 but then got pushed to R9.(substitute R8 in the following for R9, R9 for R10 etc)

"I think R8 is going to continue to focus on improving the framerate. I still have a lot of optimisations I want to get in, and I think these will help improve the framerate even further. I also want to spend a little time improving the front end, as it's getting harder for me to add new settings and options in there. I also want to add an option for changing some of the settings while a rom is running (i.e. I think it's time we had an in-game menu.) Another thing I'll look at for R8 is saving settings between runs of the emulator - this way Daedalus will remember which controller setup you prefer for each rom. Finally I want to add an option to quit back to the main menu without having to restart Daedalus.

Phew! That's quite a big list. I can't guarantee I'll be able to add all that for the next release, but that's what I'm currently aiming for. I think it's more important to try and release regularly (i.e. every 3-4 weeks) rather than try and cram everything into one go, so some of these features might move back to R9 if I slip behind."

So we should expect some speed and graphical fixes and hopefully a menu (GUI) to improve the user friendliness.

Kind regards

milo22 said...

Because speed hacked roms of various n64 games do exist.

johnybon said...

The prospect of a little more speed in R9 is so mouth-watering...
Surely if most games reach playable speed (15fps?) then implementing sound will start to become more of an issue; which leads me to the question: Is there any chance of Norm doing sound on ME and non-Me versions? Or will an kernel mode eloader emerge to save those of us not running 1.5, I wonder?

This blog is supposed to be about discussing the N64 emulator and to communicate with the dev about any questions, suggestions or concerns we may have. Do you really think he has the time or energy to read through a whole lot of totally off topic posts about 911?

This isn't the time or the place to be discussing such an issue. All you are doing is wasting his time. I thought every one knew much better than this.

RyanMWolfe said...

Yeah well i did something stupid so I am gonna fix it.

So I am Changing Subject Back to N64, Does anyone think that Strnrm can have a full speed N64 Emu with Sound by the end of next Year? and also do you think he will start making us pay as it get super fast? if he does i will buy 10 of them to help him out.

joshisposer said...

I would pay a max of 10$ if it had mostly full speed and complete sound. Now, when I say mostly full speed, I mean, not completely full because it is somewat not probable, but sound i think is possible. but ten bucks is a great price i think. even five will make him a lot. but, who said he is going to charge? strmnnrmn has proven himself to be awesome.

Imtiaz said...

StrmnNrmn is not going to chrage for this emulator, at least I hope not. I'm sure a paypal account will be set up for people who are willing to donate, but no one will be charged for the actual eumlator. It's been quite a while without an update, and I'm kind of anxious. I really want to see an incredible amount of speed in R9, and if possible, full speed. For now, I just want some information on where StrmnNrmn is at this point.

Lodis said...

The fact that no one charges for excellent homebrew is part of what makes it so special, especially in this day and age.

I do not think it should be charged for but instead donations encouraged.

I have donated quite a few times and it was always appreciated, especially because it was not compulsory.

Simply opening a paypal account for donations should be enough.

Everyone else, i managed to figure out most GFX stuff however it sets me back a bit as blendmodes.cpp file needed to be trashed meaning mux files need to be re added) ( I dont really wish to explain as it would mean 1000's of daedalus releases everywhere by noobs who have no idea what so ever) (Don't blame me, i was one to)

In the meantime im concentrating on (in no particular order)
1. Micro Machines
2. World is not Enough
3. Mario 64 (any purple textures or odd things)
4. F-Zero X
5. Forsaken
6. Virtual Pool
7. Pilot wings
8. Diddy Kong Racing
9. Zelda: OOT
10. Sin and Punishment
11. Banjo Kazooie (Even though its slow, the ground is NQR)

Will release a new build after each game has been totally fixed.

Also I will pass on the stuff to StrmnNrmn for R9 ( Before textures were screwing up badly)

Any black textures / Purple textures should be fixed (Such as OOT town after time as passed).

Note: This (probably) wont provide speed ups in many roms, but will make up for the time wasted
1) saving Missing_mux.txt files
2) attempting to load black textures

-Wally-

P.S Stop filling up the blog with useless posts. If the blog is reallocated to dcemu, I will be keeping forum moderated, so any off topic crap will be deleted and user may obtain a week ban. Unlike now its all messy and hard for strmnNrmn to sift through all this useless crap that is unrelated to this.
