PIF fixes

It's about time I posted an update with news of some of the things I've been working on! Annoyingly the '.' key on my keyboard has decided to stop working so apologies in advance for any dodgy punctuation :)

I've been having a look at fixing a couple of issues related to the way that Daedalus handles the N64 PIF (peripheral interface) emulation. The PIF is responsible for a number of different functions, including:

 • Reading the controller status

 • Reading/writing to the eeprom

 • Reading/writing to the controller mempak

Access to the PIF is controlled through a 64 byte region of memory. Writing to this area triggers the PIF to interpret the block of data as a sequence of commands (such as those listed above), and the CPU can read back from this region to obtain the results.

Correctly handling the way the block is formatted is key to emuating the PIF accurately. Over the years I've rewritten this code several times as I've fixed bugs, each time fixing certain incorrect assumptions made during the previous version. Usually these assumptions were made on incredibly useful, but incomplete information (such as early docs from LaC (*waves*) ) which described how to use the PIF rather than how to emulate it. Unfortunately there was lots of gaps in this information and so I'd keep finding roms that used the PIF is various ways that I'd not taken into account.

A few years ago I stumbled across something rather amazing - a document which described the PIF hardware in great detail. Not only was it very thorough - including details on all the various formatting commands I'd spent hours reverse engineering - it also included an insane amount of detail on things such as the chip timings and the even method by which the PIF is used as a 'security system' to lock out pirated roms.

What was this document? Did I find it tucked away on some obscure N64 hacking site? No - it was US Patent 6,394,905, filed by Nintendo in September 2000. Genius!

There are actually a whole series of N64 patents (see 5,426,762 and 4,799,635 for a couple of other similar examples.) It's not all good news though because unfortunately they're all written in a horribly convulted form of Legalese:

There are six JoyChannels available in the present exemplary embodiment. Each Channel's transmit data and receive data byte sizes are all independently assignable by setting size parameters. In the exemplary embodiment, all six channels size parameter setups are required, whether they are used or not.

Ouch.

This is the statement I spotted a couple of weeks ago that explained why one of the previous assumptions I'd made wasn't working in all cases:

If the 64 bit CPU 100 wants to change JoyChannel's Tx/RxData assignment, a 32 bit format flag is used, where a certain bit(s) specify the desired format. For example, when Wr64B or Wr4B is issued when this flag is "1", PIF executes each JoyChannel's Tx/RxData assignment based on each channel's Tx/Rx Size. In other words, unless this flag is set to "1" with Wr64B or Wr4B, Tx/RxData area assignment does not change. After Tx/RxData assignment, this flag is reset to "0" automatically.

After painfully wading through the text, it's basically saying that if you write a '1' to the last byte of the PIF block, you need to reformat all the channels. Otherwise you just assume the same formatting as the previous command.

The bug that I've since fixed was actually caused by two problems. Firstly, I was reformatting the channels regardless of how this last byte was set. I'd assumed that it was always set to '1' by the CPU to indicate that a command was ready, and set to '0' by the PIF when it was finished executing. In a few roms I was seeing '0' being written, but I didn't know why. Quite often when I saw them do this they'd hang shortly aftwerwards.

The other problem that contributed to the bug was that I was accidentally overwritting the 'Tx/RxData assignment' area with 0 as I was processing the PIF block (actually, I was clearing the top 4 bits of each byte, rather than just the top 2). This meant that when I reformatted the Tx/RxData assigments the areas were smaller than expected, so the PIF handling code would abort and return with failure.

These two problems combined to cause certain roms to get confused and hang when trying to access the mempak. The total fix was a few dozen lines of code to separate out the PIF formatting from the command execution, and a single-line fix for the second issue. All the roms I found exhibiting this issue now make further progress (hooray!) There may well be other issues that have been resolved with this fix too :)

It's bedtime for me now (well, maybe a little Dead Rising on the 360 first :) I'll try and get back into the habit of updating a bit more often from this week on. Sorry if I've not replied to your email - it's not personal, it's just me being rubbish.

Well do it anyway, maybe they will still add it in something like downloadable content, please.

Morgan said...

As long as it has the adhoc multiplayer I'll be fine with it. Anyway thanks StrmnNrmn for updating and I'm glad you fixed this bug it, to those wondering what it will do I guess I'll answer that. Basically you just get faster loading times, like for example if you selected something in a game and it had to bring up a new screen, if new screen commming up hung for a couple of seconds well now this is fixed!

Imtiaz said...

Thank you very much StrnmNrmn. At least we are getting fantastic news from you, unlike Yoshiro who messed everyhting up for the PSX-P release... Anyway, I hope you speed things up, literally. Keep working on the speed and never give up hope. We are all behind you!

yay for dead rising!,any one have a 360 they should add CloggedBarrel,he godly i hear

Almost forgot, Wally I noticed some bugs in Mario Kart 64 with your build you posted the other day. For some reason the green/red shells are invicible (I can see they're shadows on the road and that's it). Also in the ice level the gound is invisible, there may be more bugs but that's all I've seen thus far. Hope that helps and I hope everyone else is seeing the same problems as me, if not tell me because I'll try downloading it again or something.

Sroon said...

No no Morgan he messed up!
I already told him that!
And thank you Morgan for eplaining what this fix does!

I totally can't wait for R9. this is just getting better and better. Speed is great right now and compatibility will be even cooler. Yeah!

Keep up the good work StrmnNrmn!

You set a good example of what a PSP homebrewer should be - something that Yoshihiro is not.

(I find it funny how I always thought Yoshihiro to be a cheat - to only find out that he actually is!)

Armen said...

If Yoshihiro used PacManFans source and barely edited it, then how does it load .bin and .isos when PMFs didn't and why does it go at about 8FPS while PMF went only about 1FPS on demos...correct me if I am wrong but making minimal source changes doesn't make that much of a difference.... So Yoshihiro must have done some coding, I think he did a great job who cares about pacman he didnt do nothing with that project and left now hes jealous yoshirio did something with it, I woudl say using about 2% of PMF's code. W/E I dont care if code is stolen or altered or w/e as long as I have a ps1 emulator runnning on my psp I couldnt careless, probably you computer geeks care who creates it, any way back on topic any speed increase strmnnrmn?

This means many games will now work..

Im guessing
Conquers bad fur day
Donkey kong 64

Majoras Mask
What ever else uses CIC 6105 or 16k eeprom should work!!

Good stuff StrmnNrmn!

Morgan: Did you try 1.1 release?

wally*won_kenobie said...

Just checked, i never mentioned my new 1.1 release of the program..

I apologise for that

Its on Dcemu :)

1.2 will be out sometime next week with fixes for:

Monster Truck Madness : Note for strmnNrmn, uses a K5 mux (whatever that is)

Over 50 muxes have been added since 1.0, if something doesn't work right i will screenshot it and send it to strmnNrmn

Morgan said...

Thanks Wally I'll go get 1.1 and yeah could you try to get SSB working a little better. The changes you already added are great, but I'm just wondering if you can go further. Also a hgue special thanks for fixing DKR for me, I hope when R9 comes out some of these problems will be fixed. Lastly Wally do you think Goldeneye & Resident Evil 2 will work now?

Morgan said...

Wally I tried the 1.5 kxploited version that "video freak" made MANY times and I can't get v1.1 to work on my 1.5? I hate when this happens, something wierd about changing eboots. Any tips to get it working, or could you maybe link me to another download of your v1.1, please?

wally*won_kenobie said...

odd.

Yes resident evil should be on that list

Nothing wrong with mario kart in this version AFAIK.

I have tried to get SSB to work better without success. also ingame its missing instructions which i would imagine it would be more than implementing them like im doing with the blendmodes..

Morgan said...

Yeah StrmnNrmn has to do some work on SSB to get it working in-game, hopefully he'll have something done for it in R9. Anyway Wally I'm going to try v1.1 again, maybe it'sll work today!

Morgan said...

morgan I highley reccomend you get a custom firmware they are great.

Also going by patterns we are gonna have r9 pretty soon.

Morgan said...

Whats so great about custom firmware? I run all my emulators very fast, I have my homebrew customized. Then I got Devhook for all my 2.71 needs. Like really what can you do with the custom firmwares that I can't, maybe I'll switch.

PSDroideka said...

Morgan: Custom Firmware Proof of Concept for 1.5 basically allows you to:

1)Run 1.0 eboots
2)Hide Corrupt icons (if above isnt on)
3)Autoboot a program
4)Stop UMD's from loading as soon as PSP is turned on
5)Recovery Mode in case PSP becomes Bricked!
6)Maybe something else.

Settings can be turned on or off using a text file supplied with it

Highly reccomended package bro

linktwoheart said...

is it possible when i downgrade from 2.71 to 1.5 to upgrade the ''sony way'' to 2.71 and higher, or do i have to use a devhook to upgrade. My other question is it possible to play online games by using devhook? My last question is, can sony see if you are using devhook in the future when the official ps1 emulator is released? If not, that means you can buy the ps1 games trough the official psp way and still play n64 emulators and stuff on my 1.5 psp devhooked to 3.**

PS. sorry in advance for posting in the wrong sectiom or on the wrong website, but it was a burning question for me and i didnt know where to post it atm

wally*won_kenobie said...

Answer hazy, try again later

Morgan said...

Well I already hide my corrupt data icons so that's not a problem. Also about the stopping the UMD's when the PSP turns on, you can jsut turn the security to level 1 and you won't load the UMD's when it turns on. Also I don't flash my psp so I don't think I'll be bricking it anytime soon. Here's what I got though!

Platnium (silver really, no fingerprints!) XCM faceplate

1.5 PSP

1GB - 90 songs, 5 pics, NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, N64 (Daedalus Wally's v1.2), Devhook, and iR Shell.

PSP Stamina Battery (30% longer life)

Also I use PSPWXP for my Windows XP needs. I'm fine with my 1.5 regular psp because I've got it hooked up and it's better than anyone elses anywhere in my area.

Hey does anyone here make .AT3's? If I got two mp3 files I would liek converted to .AT3 but for some reason it won't work. I downloaded the Atrac3 codec and then got GoldWave. I have put .at3 after renaming it but it still says it's a .wav file. Can someone help me and convert these 2 mp3's for me PLEASE?

skater9269 said...

yes you can do what ever you want with your 1.5 and devhook doesnt upgrade it just emulates the firmware big diffrence

skater9269 said...

morgan you also can load prxs in 1.5 meaning you could take screenshots or whatever plus it will be helpful when the 8 gigs come out to load the prx that fixes that.

RyanMWolfe said...

Someone please make a spiff up that gives us more speed. the graphics are fine for Mario 64. and that is the one game that works good so why not make it perfect with just a little more speed.

Ps: i do appreciate what Wally and Strnrm are doing

Please try to think carefully as to whether your post will contribute to discussion of the emulator, in order that we keep this blog on topic.

I'd hate for strmnnrmn to read these comments and decide to close the commenting section on this blog as I believe it can be used both to give useful feedback and hold interesting discussions about the future of the emulator.

Thanks.

Guys I figured out the problem, I went bakc to using Goldwave and I found out after I made the atrac3 file I had to go into folder options and change the "hide extions" setting or something. It made it so when I changed the ".wav" to ".at3" it actually changes the file type, with that last setting on it didn't do it. So I figured out my problem!, I'll probably post some homebrew packs soon maybe!

wally*won_kenobie said...

Well you can use command prompt or whatever

go to the directory of the at3 file CD to it

milo22 said...

Morgan, Some games like GTA:VCS have a little video that plays when you highlight the game in the XMB. You can do the same thing with the Dadalus EBOOT. With a program like "PBP Unpacker" the option for adding video is called "ICON1.PMF" but inorder to add the video that I put a link for you would have to convert that video to PMF. The only way to do this would be to use a program called "UMD Composer" a.k.a. UMD Tools. This program is an official program from Sony that was leaked a couple months ago, but every time I try to download it via torrent it never seems to start downloading. I assumed that you might have the program so you could do this for me. I just thought it would be cool to highlight the Dadalus EBOOT and have that kid screaming "OMG!!! Its Nintendo 64444!!!!!!!" or it might be more appropriate to put something like this
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5235061638850336421&q
=nintendo+64+commercial&hl=en

The whole video would be awesome but to be more practical just the ending would be nice.

Skulz good job, I didn't think you would use the green pochi backgrounds though since I just used them in my custom Daedalus build. I think if you changed those two pochi images you would have an even better looking mod to Daedalus. For those interested in my two builds go check them out here!

An example of this is

StrmnNrmn i can't wait for your relase!!! i have a new kirby "hy" icon for your r9 relase... for my Hero Stormin ;)

ukcuf16 said...

u whats relly fukin hilarious is that stmnnrmn probably hasn't even worked on his emulator. Im guessing he finally went mental. its even funnier that people are expecting enourmous speed ups , perfect n64 emulation.

Morgan said...

StrmnNrmn has been working on his emulator, though with no proof that's not a fact but still I know he has been working on it. He wouldn't just not work on it for this amount of time and say nothing. The longer we wait the better it will be, but to tell you the truth I wouldn't care if he released R9 until November, as long as he would update us frequently. I'd take an update on this blog every 3 days and a release like every month and half or so. If it was like that least we'd be kept fresh on all of Daedalus's details. Anyway I'm going on and on, just keep up the great work StrmnNrmn and I know you'll update us soon!

RyanMWolfe said...

Hey Norm we would like an update, but if you can get more speed or compatability fast then do it then release another one. but you can take your time, there is nothing we can say to force you to release it. and even if there was we would just wait and not force you. NO PRESSURE MAN take YOUR TIME.

N64-Lover said...

I think it's safe to say that he hasn't had time to work on it, or we would have been updated if there had been significant progress made.
It's hard to keep your focus when you work alone for long periods of time. This is an area where smiff came into his own for the PJ64 team, they don't have time to get bored..Lol
StrmnNrmn, even if there isn't anything additional added to the emu, we would still all like to know that you're o.k.

wally*won_kenobie said...

n64-lover, Im with you, at least we should know hes ok :) (Chances are hes busy at work as things do go wrong at large banks) Dude im glad you havent fallen into the "PLEASE UPDATE" scheme. I think this has pissed tsurumaru off.

Those who are saying StrmnNrmn, we need an update STFU we have heard that same sentence over and over and over and over and over and over and over etc etc etc....

tsurumaru said...

Hi Wally,

I have been reading the comments on the blog, but to be honest with you there haven't been any particularly interesting comments posted for me to reply to, or comment on, therefore rather than post for the sake of it and spam the place up I simply refrained from posting and read something else instead. (Hint hint people).
Actually today I read through Exophases release notes for version 0.8 of his great GBA emulator for the PSP.
Since this is broadly relevant (an emulator work in progress for the PSP) I thought I'd comment on it here.
Basically I was disgusted. Not with Exophase or his work, or those thanking him for the release, but rather with the stream of posts that
followed requesting future fixes from him.
I'll quote what Exophase included in the release notes:

NOTE 2: Since I know this is as far as a lot of people here I have a little request. Please, please, (I'd italicize this if I could) please stop constantly asking me when the next release will be, what it'll have, etc. And while you're at it, please stop asking me to implement wi-fi multiplayer, cheat support, or fix all of your games. Some things will happen in due time, other things might not ever happen. I devote about as much time as I can to this emulator
and I carefully include as much as I can in releases to try to minimize the number of people who will nag me next time (erm, I mean, to make the most people happy), so I don't release every other day or anything like that. Sorry that I can't release once a week, but I'm a lot busier now than I was when I was first developing this emulator. Good thing I got the first version out before that, wasn't it?

Now just think for a second, quite a lot of this could be very relevant for daedalus, this is someone who is spending most of their spare time coding an emulator that potentially hundreds of thousands of people will enjoy, for no real money (possibly some donations) and little appreciation (on the grander scheme of things). Now I'm not saying that people are ungrateful but from reading the above note I'm sure even the less intelligent of us would get the point that Exophase is trying to make (with good humour too), stop asking him for the next release, in fact stop nagging him completely as its driving him crazy.

Does that stop people though?
Hell no.
On the first page of posts someone asks him to fix a particular game, a few posts later someone demands to know from him how to set up irshell in 2.71 so he can run the emulator.

Now just think about being that dev, be it Exophase or Strmnnrmn, your hard work just out as a new release, and straight away its begun again.

Coders like Strmnnrmn and Exophase have a huge amount of my respect(not just for their coding skills), but because of the crap they have to put up with, and the restraint they show.

Now we may get an update next weekend, next month, or even next year. We may get a new release, or perhaps just an update. Ultimately its Stormin's time to use as he pleases, try to understand that people and be happy for what you are given.

Kind Regards.

WOW are you guys in for a real treat tommarow if you like Zelda OOT!
Wally has fixed the backgrouds in Links house and the Market! and i also got to save too!
I started a new game and i have been playing with saveing working!
If you want to save in OOT just save from the menuy then press "SELECT" on the PSP then do it press select again to make sure it worked, THEN... In the Daedalus menu press triangle to go back to rom select then load up Zelda OOT again! then there you have it!

PSDroideka said...

MKG: Please don't ask where StrmnNrmn is, im sure he's very aware of where he is and doesn't need to be asked, many coders, flash animators etc etc have been known to give up becase of people like you so just give the poor guy a break, this is supposed to be discussion about the emulator not a flame festival (see PSP Updates for that) Or a store for spying in on coders lives.

Imtiaz said...

It's been quite a while. I hope some of this time is going towards the emulator.

PSDroideka said...

Im sure it is, you just have to remember that these are HUMANS that code these emulators not super-source-code-puping-machine-type-thingies, well except for maybe ZX-81 eh?

pkmaximum said...

Wow no update from Strmmmmn in a while, iether he has been working on a lot of changes to this emulator =]

Or he took the dark road that pac man fan took D:

Lets pray that is not the case.

supream2 said...

Hey, i've been followin progress for awhile now and viewong all of these comments and guys...you have to realise that, since strmnNrmn is gone it doesn't neccessarily mean a lot of updates...He does have a life out side of what he is doing for us psp users, probably a job and a family to take care of, i appreciate what your doin for the psp community StrmnNrmn keep up the good work m8

Sroon said...

Maaan I hope he is okay...
well StrmnNrmn you are a god!
BTW Wally hows your progress going bro?
And StrmnNrmn I just want to thank you for having my dream cum true by making Zelda64 PLAYABLE!!!! on my PSP on the go!
Thank you maaan you are my hero!

shallowlife said...

Hmm i have a theory , u know how his '.' button is messed up ? well perhaps his computer has a pw that includes a '.' so he cant sign in anymore!

Sroon said...

Hey StrmnNmn I have an idea for a sort of speed increase...
I was thinking that you could do what Zx-81 did for his GBA emulator and add a function that lets you cut off part of the screen to give more FPS.
Example...
in Mario Kart you could cut off the top part of of the screen cuz you dont "really" need to know the place your in, the item u have, and/or the sky, so you can just cut it off to increase framerate! Also in zelda you can cut off part of the sides or something because zelda is "I think" A game people like to play so it would go faster!

just a suggestion bro.

Wally I think you could be able to answer this because StrmnNrmn is away...

( O ) ( O )

wally*won_kenobie said...

Answer is no ....

StrmNrmn would want to do this emulator good and proper without trying to make the game any worse than it is...

Time is patience my friends.
That is all

Sroon said...

Okayp!
Thank you Wally.

( O ) ( O )

Morgan said...

StrmnNrmn doesn't have to use little tricks to improve framerate, just give him his time like I'm doing now and you'll see what happens to the framerate. StrmnNrmn is an excellent coder, don't worry he'll take care of the framerate.

ukcuf16 said...

I hate u morgan..

lordroba said...

hey StrmnNrmn, I'm not asking for an update to the emulator, or even news about a new fix you might have found, all I want to hear is something like "I'm still alive". Sorry, it's just that I'm worried since you haven't posted in a while. Anyways, if you've been working on the emulator then, keep up the good work! Although it might not seem like it at times, we really appreciate the work and effort your put into this project.

PSDroideka said...

I really feel bad for StrmnNrmn, i mean seriously this is why coders wait a while between releases because StrmnNrmn released so many releases in such a short amount of time hes set a high standard so people think he's dead just after 21 days!

Mario Kart God said...

Im getting a little worried.

b) Spend that time coding Daedalus?

I just hope Strmnnrmn is ok.

Mario Kart God said...

Someone should email him.

Imtiaz said...

Disturbd1, you make a compelling argument. By the way, I was only kidding about the horror film thing. I'm not worried anymore. Let us just wait and see what happens. I'd say about one more month before we get an update. He's probably with his family. Lets leave him be.

You think StrmnNrmn sits in fronts of his computer to masturbate and code on Daudalus?? Just because he hasnt update doesnt mean he's hurt or anything. It means he has a life and better things to worry about. Jesus Christ...

Let's look at this in comparison. When was the last time SNES TYL was updated? Long before this...

People have lives, ya know? Shit happens, family members die, you get new job, you get married, shit like that...

You can't expect someone to sit behind a keyboard all day, read his blog, and code an emulator FOR FREE... He has a job ya know...

Just cool down, and wait for the next version... And if you are that impatient, pick up some C++ books, and get reading, and fix it up yourself... Or pick up a copy of Playboy... Whatever seems more interesting to you..

Moral of the story: BE PATIENT.

Q: Is Shallowlife another one ofe the 100 impatient posters here?

Guys just be patient like the other guys have said, look at the TYL builds of Snes9X or gpSP or PS1P which is going to be updated after like nearly a year. If i were Strmnnrmn i would ask to be hosted at DCEMU or something that way everytime he posts some news moderaters can ban the living shit out of the hundreds of spammers here.

look he is obviously busy i mean a reformat every time, just cause he said pif fix didnt mean he fixed it all the way, and damn you flammerrrs look at the amount of post, also to wally, not being an ass but im sure he wouldnt mind if you "updated" his release. But changing the name in the psp menu isnt really that cool im sure i would not appreciate changing the name.
